The One Filter That Changes How You Follow Up on Leads

Melissa posted a viral Instagram reel a few months back. Three hundred and fifty opt-ins. She was excited, then immediately overwhelmed. Three hundred and fifty people is a lot to follow up with, and she had no system in place to handle volume at that level.
The first question I asked her wasn't about her follow-up sequence or her email platform. It was simpler than that: can the people on that list actually spend money?
Not as a judgment about them. As a filter. Because 350 leads sounds great until you're spending hours on conversations with people who were never going to buy regardless of how good your follow-up was.
Why this filter matters before anything else
AI can help you build sophisticated lead scoring systems, and sometimes that's what's needed. But before you get to a scoring system, you need to know what criteria actually matter for your specific offer.
For her, the question was whether her audience of Instagram followers had the financial capacity for her mid-ticket program. That's a different filter than what I use for a migration offer (active program, current platform usage) and different from what you might use for a coaching offer (clear problem, previous investment in solving it).
The filter changes. The habit of filtering before spending time doesn't.
How AI fits into this
Once you know your criteria, AI can apply them at scale. She could feed the opt-in list into an AI research process, ask it to check public profiles for signals that match her buyer criteria, and surface the subset worth a personal follow-up.
That's what I did with my list of 2,500 former platform users. The research step, done manually, would have taken weeks. With an AI process doing the legwork, it runs in the background while I'm working on something else.
But even without a sophisticated system, the filter itself changes how you spend your time. If you're doing manual follow-up, asking one qualifying question early in the conversation — before you invest thirty minutes — gives you information that makes the rest of the conversation better or shorter. Both outcomes are useful.
The broader lesson
Lead volume is only valuable when it's matched to follow-up capacity and offer fit. Getting 350 opt-ins is a win. Spending your week chasing 340 people who were never going to buy is a different story.
AI doesn't just help you follow up faster. It helps you follow up smarter. The research, the scoring, the flagging of high-probability names before you spend a single hour of your time — that's a meaningful upgrade to how solopreneurs handle outreach.
